Case Study – Database as a Service (DBaaS) using Exadata – leading electricity distribut

The Client is a Government electricity distributor, providing the safe and reliable supply of electricity to 2.4 million people in households and businesses across Sydney’s Greater West, the Blue Mountains, Southern Highlands, the Illawarra and the South Coast.

OBJECTIVES

The Government electricity distributor invested in the deployment of high-end Oracle Exadata hardware platforms to host their Oracle databases so that they could implement a ‘Database as a Service’ (DBaaS) solution. The solution objectives were to:-

  1. Provide a highly available and reliable Oracle Platform for internal Business applications based on an Exadata Maximum Availability Architecture (MAA); and

  2. Reduce on-going license and support costs.

DELIVERABLE

Fusion Professionals were engaged to transform the existing infrastructure and architecture to a platform capable of delivering the ‘Database as a Service’ to their internal consumers. The engagement required:-

  1. The provision and configuration of Solution Architecture, Cloud Platforms and Data Management to meet the Exadata MAA; and

  2. To ensure the DBaaS platform and all PaaS capabilities were deployed in a timely and efficient manner with the least impact to the business.

These tasks included architectural design, private cloud deployment, database upgrade and migration to the new platform and the transition of Database-as-a-Service capabilities to consumption and support.

Fusion Professionals expertise and invaluable platform and architecture experience allowed the delivery of best practice solutions and processes to the entire lifecycle of the project.

DATABASE AS A SERVICE – CLOUD ARCHITECTURE AND DESIGN

Fusion Professionals wealth of experience in the development and deployment of Solution Architecture services and Cloud Platforms aided the success of architecting the entire DBaaS platform, designing DBaaS services and establishing database migration paths for their entire Oracle database estate.

The Cloud Architecture established the DBaaS standards to be used and identified the required components and their relationships. It also helped to build a comprehensive view of how to manage DBaaS component development and delivery to meet the business requirements for availability, service levels and cost. The Cloud Architecture was instrumental in managing change, avoiding the duplication of work and facilitating the reuse of the existing components.

DATABASE AS A SERVICE – CLOUD DEPLOYMENT AND DATABASE MIGRATION

Fusion Professionals specialist expertise in Exadata Cloud Infrastructure and Oracle Database technologies, were critical in identifying and deploying best practices, identifying and avoiding known pitfalls and staging issues when moving a clustered database and alternative solutions to common network. Throughout every stage of the deployment, Fusion Professionals creating detailed documentation for provisioning, migration procedures, testing and stress cases.

DATABASE AS A SERVICE – CLOUD OPERATE AND MONITOR

Fusion Professionals rich experience in establishing cloud support models and end-to-end monitoring frameworks provided considerable project benefit during the transition from “plan and build” to “operate and monitor” states. The DBaaS offerings were deployed and implemented effectively and are now supported efficiently, reducing the on-going license and support costs. The Government electricity distributor can now take advantage of best in case cloud capabilities including; quicker provisioning, consumption based charge back and higher availability.

DATABASE AS A SERVICE – DATA MANAGEMENT

Fusion Professionals expertise in the database technologies and data management services required for Oracle Exadata resulted in the delivery of a robust solution that could rapidly maximize the return on cloud technology investment. The Implementation risks were minimized by leveraging the Fusion Professionals proven migration methodology, DBaaS and Data Management experience and implementation services.

DATABASE AS A SERVICE – ON-GOING REVIEW AND CAPACITY FORECASTING

Using the Fusion Professionals Cloud platform optimisation and capacity forecasting capabilities, allowed the electricity distributor to identify and manage the lifecycle of DBaaS platform in terms of technology review, resource usage and data growth. This ensures the DBaaS will meet the current and future business demands.

TECHNICAL AND BUSINESS BENEFITS

The consensus from the DBaaS Post Implementation Review was that Fusion Professionals had successfully transformed the infrastructure to a platform capable of delivering ‘Database as a Service’ to the electricity distributor’s internal consumers. This not only enhanced the electricity distributor’s database offerings, it did so on time and within budget. Enabling the first Private Cloud PaaS capabilities and new features has resulted in the business being better able to proceed with its long-term business goals and strategies.

ACHIEVEMENTS

  1. Fusion Professionals integrated two Exadata half Racks and ZFS appliance into the clients systems and established DBaaS private cloud platform.

  2. Fusion Professionals designed, migrated, tested and accomplished various live database migrations without any service impact.

  3. Fusion Professionals rebuilt the Data guard DR solutions onto the Exadata Platform.
