Case Study : Transforming the infrastructure to a platform capable of delivering ‘Database as a Serv

The Client is a Government Health Organisation, operating in providing World-class, patient-centred and digitally enabled healthcare with the goal “‘the right care, in the right place, at the right time” for everyone.

OBJECTIVES

The Health Organisation invested in the deployment of a high-end Oracle Exadata and Cisco FlexPod hardware platforms to host their Oracle and SQL databases and was looking to implement a ‘Database as a Service’ (DBaaS) solution to be serviced from this equipment to provide:

  1. A highly available and reliable Oracle and SQL Database Platform for internal Business applications based on an Exadata and Cisco FlexPod Maximum Availability Architecture (MAA); and

  2. Reduced on-going license and support costs.

DELIVERABLE

Fusion Professionals were engaged to transform the infrastructure to a platform capable of delivering ‘Database as a Service’ to their internal consumers. The assignment encompassed providing our Solution Architecture, Cloud Platforms and Data Management expertise, to ensure the DBaaS platform and all PaaS capabilities were deployed in a timely and efficient manner with the least impact to the business. Tasked included architectural design, private cloud deployment, testing and transition of Database-as-a-service capabilities to consumption and support.

Fusion professionals were able to bring invaluable experience, delivering best practices to the entire lifecycle of the project.

DATABASE AS A SERVICE – CLOUD ARCHITECTURE AND DESIGN

Fusion Professionals success has historically stemmed from its Solution Architecture services and our wealth of experience in Cloud Platforms area aided the success of architecting entire DBaaS platform, designing DBaaS services and formulating costing for each service offerings.

Cloud Architecture established the DBaaS standards to be used and identified the components and their relationships. It also helped to build a comprehensive view of how to manage DBaaS component development and delivery to meet the business requirements / service levels. The Cloud Architecture was instrumental in managing change, avoiding the duplication of work and facilitating the reuse of the components.

DATABASE AS A SERVICE – CLOUD DEPLOYMENT AND TRANSITION

The project prospered from Fusion Professionals specialism in Cloud Infrastructure (Exadata and FlexPod) and Database technologies (Oracle and MS SQL), outlining best practices, known pitfalls when moving to a clustered database and alternative solutions to common network and staging issues. At every stage creating detailed documentation for provisioning, migration procedure and test cases.

DATABASE AS A SERVICE – CLOUD OPERATE AND MONITOR

Fusion Professionals has rich experience in establishing cloud support model and end-to-end monitoring framework. The project benefited from our expertise to transit from plan & build to operate & monitor state. Thus, the DBaaS offerings have been consumed effectively and supported efficiently reducing on-going license and support costs as well as provide full cloud capabilities such as quicker provisioning, consumption based charge back and higher availability.

DATABASE AS A SERVICE – DATA MANAGEMENT

Our expertise in the database technologies and services required for Oracle Exadata and FlexPod resulted a robust and rapid solution delivery to maximise the return on cloud technology investment. Implementation risk were reduced by leveraging our proven transition methodology, experience and management services.

DATABASE AS A SERVICE – ON-GOING REVIEW AND CAPACITY FORECASTING

Using our Cloud platform optimisation and capacity forecasting capabilities, we have been continuously helping the Health Organisation to manage the lifecycle of DBaaS platform in terms of technology review, resource usage and data growth to ensure DBaaS meets current and future demands.

TECHNICAL AND BUSINESS BENEFITS

The consensus from the DBaaS Post Implementation Review was that Fusion Professionals’ successful transformation of the infrastructure to a platform capable of delivering ‘Database as a Service’ to their internal consumers, not only enhanced the department’s capabilities of the database offerings but indeed made it possible within the time-frame. Enabling first Private Cloud PaaS offerings, new features, the IT Health Organisation had never thought possible and ultimately resulting in the business being able to proceed with its long-term goals and strategies.

ACHIEVEMENTS

  1. Created DBaaS Architecture solution to transform the infrastructure to a platform capable of delivering ‘Database as a Service’ to internal consumers.

  2. Defined a fine grain service offerings, service catalogue and pricing model.

  3. Successfully deployed provisioning, security, availability, monitoring and reporting DBaaS capabilities.

  4. Reduced on-going license and support costs.
